<p><strong>Should Anything Other Than Hunger Be A Reason To Eat?</strong></p>
<p>
<p>There&#8217;s a lot of confusing information out there these days.  Especially when it comes to the subject of weight loss, dieting and getting slim.</p>
<p>
<p>Many who decide to get themselves on to the path to a better body find themselves snowed under with advice about meal timing, how much to eat, what kinds of foods to eat, when to eat which foods, and how much of each kind of food to eat.  <img alt='Alt Text' src='http://www.girlwithnoname.com/images/Eating.jpg' align="right" width='166' height='175' style="border-style: none"/></p>
<p>
<p>Tell me you haven&#8217;t heard one or all of these little gems of advice:</p>
<p>
<p><em>Don&#8217;t skip breakfast or your metabolism will be slow all day.</em></p>
<p>
<p><em>Eat every 3 hours, to keep your metabolism racing.</em></p>
<p>
<p><em>Don&#8217;t eat only two or three meals each day, eat five or six (also in order to keep your metabolism fast).</em></p>
<p>
<p><em>Don&#8217;t eat right before bed or your body can&#8217;t process it and it will just turn to fat overnight. </em> </p>
<p>
<p><em>Don&#8217;t eat for several hours before bed (for the same reason).</em></p>
<p>
<p><em>Make sure you eat before you work out so you have energy.</em></p>
<p>
<p><em>Eat (or drink) carbs after you work out to replace glycogen in your muscles.</em></p>
<p>
<p><em>Eat protein after you work out to help build muscle.</em></p>
<p>
<p><em>Don&#8217;t bother with food, you can get all the nutrition you need from this one handy shake.</em></p>
<p>
<p><strong>Sigh &#8230;  Oh Brother!  No wonder everyone&#8217;s so darned confused, right?</strong></p>
<p>
<p>Then add to the mix these special ones that make me absolutely crazy:</p>
<p>
<p><em>Take this magic pill and your metabolism will be so high your fat will just melt right off with no working out and no dieting.</em></p>
<p>
<p><em>Try this magic contraption where you can just hook up to a bunch of electrodes or sit on our vibrating machine and watch TV while burning fat with NO EFFORT and no special calorie restrictions!!</em></p>
<p>
<p><strong>ALRIGHT, WAIT!  STOP!  </strong></p>
<p>
<p><strong>Isn&#8217;t this getting just a little bit ridiculous?</strong></p>
<p>
<p>Sure there might be a tiny nugget of truth behind each and every single one of these theories (except the last two, those are outright scams), but the absolute truth is that when trying to lose weight, it comes down to one thing and one thing only:</p>
<p>
<p><strong><em>Your &#8220;Calories In&#8221; must be lower than your &#8220;Calories Out&#8221;.</em></strong></p>
<p>
<p>In other words, the calories you consume while eating must be less than your body needs in order to live, breathe, sleep, brush your teeth, work out and all the other things you do during your days.</p>
<p>
<p>The truth of the matter is, that it really doesn&#8217;t matter when you eat, or what you eat or when you eat what, or what kinds of foods you combine or how many times of the day you eat, or if your meals are large or small.  </p>
<p>
<p>All that really matters is that your body has less calories to burn on its daily functions than you are giving it.  Then it has no choice but to get its energy from your fat stores.</p>
<p>
<p>So, if you are eating when you aren&#8217;t hungry based on one or more of the advices above, stop immediately.  </p>
<p>
<p><em><strong>Only eat when you are hungry.  </strong></em></p>
<p>
<p>Why add calories to your daily allotment that you don&#8217;t even feel the need for?  That&#8217;s completely counter-intuitive to the goal, right?</p>
<p>
<p>Eat when hungry and not otherwise, and keep your calories consumed lower than your calories burned.  End of story.</p>
<p>
<p>The best bet is to figure out what the caloric range is for your body type, age, fitness level and weight loss goals are and then eat approximately 300 &#8211; 500 calories less than that each day &#8230; or 2,100 &#8211; 3,500 less than that per week.</p>
<p>
<p><em>As you go forward pursuing your weight loss goals, go ahead and eat what you want, when you want.  But remember the magic formula:</em></p>
<p>
<p><strong><em>Calories In < Calories Out = Weight Loss Success</em></strong><br />

<p><em>Did you know that real truth might actually be the OPPOSITE of that?</em></p>

<p>Hey, this guy used to work for the supplement companies.  He knows what&#8217;s a scare tactic and what&#8217;s the truth.  And he&#8217;ll tell you, straight up.</p>
<p>
<p>And besides all that, the practice of Intermittent Fasting is a GREAT and EFFECTIVE way to keep your &#8220;Calories In&#8221; lower than your &#8220;Calories Out&#8221;.</p>
<p>
<p><strong>I practice it myself&#8230; all the time.  And I&#8217;ve never experienced one of those evil &#8220;<em>Metabolic Slowdowns</em>&#8220;.</strong></p>
<p>
<p>What it does for ME, is get my calories back in check, especially when real life gets in the way or a special event has tipped my calories up a bit too high for the day.</p>
<p>

<p>It&#8217;s that time of year where a lot of people are thinking about making some changes to themselves in the way of getting in better shape or losing some excess weight.</p>
<p>
<p><em>If you&#8217;re trying to lose weight and are finding the massive amount of information (and misinformation) out there about how to do it best, you are not alone.</em></p>
<p>
<p><strong>There&#8217;s an easy way to lose weight</strong> but for some reason the diet, fitness and nutrition industries have managed to confuse the subject so much that <strong>many people don&#8217;t know where to turn for the real answer</strong>.</p>
<p>
<p>I&#8217;m here today to tell you what that answer is:  <img alt='Need To Lose Weight' src='http://www.girlwithnoname.com/images/Need-To-Lose-Weight.jpg' align="right" width='242' height='160' style="border-style: none"/></p>
<p>
<p>Your calories consumed must be less than the calories your body needs to function on a day by day basis.  </p>
<p>
<p><strong>In other words, &#8220;<em>Eat Less, Move More</em>&#8220;. </strong> </p>
<p>
<p>END OF STORY!</p>
<p>
<p><em>Yes, it really IS that simple.</em></p>
<p>
<p>Give your body lots of reasons to burn calories (which is why everyone says to lose weight working out is a something you should do, and they are right because it helps you burn those calories).  </p>
<p>
<p>But also look at the quality of the calories you are consuming.</p>
<p>
<p><em>You want to feel fuller on less calories, right?</em></p>
<p>
<p>Therefore, the thing you really want to aim for is finding foods that will keep you feeling fuller longer (and this can be different kinds of foods for different people, we aren&#8217;t all cut from the exact same metabolic cloth here), and eat a little bit less than need to satisfy our body&#8217;s caloric needs and NOT MORE.</p>
<p>
<p>This means:  <strong>Don&#8217;t stuff yourself with every meal.</strong>  </p>
<p>
<p>This might seem like a no-brainer when you read it but you&#8217;d be surprised how many people gorge at meal time past the feeling of &#8216;full&#8217; until they are stuffed, but wonder why they can&#8217;t lose weight when they only eat one meal a day and starve the rest of the day.  </p>
<p>
<p>Well, probably because that one meal was worth TWO days of calories and their body is unlikely to burn all of it off before their next huge meal the next day.  </p>
<p>
<p><em>Even worse off are the people that eat lots of meals throughout the day and do the same thing with every meal.</em></p>
<p>
<p>So &#8230; what kinds of foods are the best so that you can feel fuller, longer and not have to limit yourself to one meal a day or starving all day long every day?</p>
<p>
<p><img alt='Alt Text' src='http://www.girlwithnoname.com/images/Successful-Weight-Loss.jpg' align="left" width='112' height='171' style="border-style: none"/>Most people find that nutrient dense foods will make them feel fuller longer, as opposed to &#8216;empty calories&#8217; that you find in most processed foods, fast foods and junk foods.  </p>
<p>
<p><strong>So, try to fill up mostly on whole, natural fruits, vegetables, grains, nuts, seeds and meats and seafood. </strong> </p>
<p>
<p><em>The closer to nature your food source is the more nutrient dense it will be. </em> </p>
<p>
<p>These types of foods also tend to be lower in calories than their processed brethren, so you can eat more of it and get fuller faster.</p>
<p>
<p>However, all that being said, <strong>it is not impossible to eat processed and junk foods and still lose weight</strong>.  </p>
<p>
<p>It&#8217;s unlikely you&#8217;ll be very healthy at your lower weight if all you ever eat is junk food and you aren&#8217;t giving your body the proper nutrients it needs so remember that when reaching for your next donut instead of a healthy salad.  </p>
<p>
<p>Also remember you won&#8217;t be able to eat as MUCH junk food because of their extremely high calorie content, so you might wind up eating your daily caloric limit and still winding up feeling hungry at the end of the day.</p>
<p>
<p><strong>So, if you want junk food, have it.</strong>  </p>
<p>
<p>Just don&#8217;t overdo it.  And, remember it might just very well be your only meal that day if it&#8217;s worth your entire day&#8217;s calorie allotment.</p>
<p>
<p>The magic to losing weight really is very simple &#8230; even easy once you know what you need to keep track of.  </p>
<p>
<p><strong>And there really is NO TRICK.</strong>  <em>Calories In vs. Calories Out.</em>  End of Story.<br />

<p><strong>Last night was a big night.</strong></p>
<p>
<p>I&#8217;m hurtin&#8217; today (<em>yes, I&#8217;m human, I have some hideously HUGE cheat days sometimes, too</em>) &#8230;</p>
<p>
<p>The menu at the event I attended last night was pre-determined and dictated to the attendees &#8230; I HAD to eat their deep-fried food or I could choose to starve.<img alt='Lemon Chicken Chinese Food' src='http://www.girlwithnoname.com/images/Lemon-Chicken-Chinese-Food.jpg' align="right" width='162' height='122' style="border-style: none"/></p>
<p>
<p>So I ate deep-fried food.  EEEK.</p>
<p>
<p>And to cap it off, I ate WAAAAAAAY too much of it !!!</p>
<p>
<p><em>(what the hell, sometimes you just gotta live a little, right?)</em></p>
<p>
<p>Luckily I have JUST the trick to counter-act that kinda action to keep myself on track and not sabotage my goals.</p>
<p>
<p><strong>I won&#8217;t gain an ounce from this big ol&#8217; cheat night.  I can guarantee it.</strong><br />

<p>When people consider the subject of fasting, there&#8217;s a lot of misinformation and myths surrounding this practice and it can sometimes make it difficult to get to the realities of the health benefits of Fasting. </p>
<p>
<p>Fasting has been around since ancient times, and many of the first references to it come from that old tome known as the Bible. </p>
<p>
<p>People knew even back then the many and varied benefits one can derive from fasting, whether it be for short or longer periods of time. </p>
<p>
<p>There are many examples from all religions that detail the benefits of fasting from a spiritual perspective, but there are also many other benefits to be realized from a health and wellness standpoint. </p>
<p>
<p>So, let&#8217;s take a look at seven of the longer-standing myths that accompany the practice of fasting.</p>
<p>
<p><img alt='Religious Fasting' src='http://www.girlwithnoname.com/images/Religious-Fasting.jpg' align="right" width='150' height='200' style="border-style: none"/>1.  <strong>Fasting is a religious activity.</strong> </p>
<p>
<p>Not necessarily. Many devoted holistic health practitioners employ some form of fasting into their health regimen, whether it is for cleansing or for weight loss help.</p>
<p>
<p>2.  <strong>You can fast in many ways.</strong> </p>
<p>
<p>Partially true, but the spirit of this gets us thinking in the wrong direction. The purpose of a fast isn&#8217;t to necessarily &#8220;fast from chocolate for a day&#8221;, but to be part of a well-thought out health plan that emphasizes a total health solution. Many people decide to fast from whatever their latest obsession is, in the hopes that this will somehow help.</p>
<p>
<p>3.  <strong>Juice fasting is a great way to go.</strong></p>
<p>
<p>I would take issue with this. To me this isn&#8217;t really a fast, just another fad diet trick. The increased amounts of natural sugars can cause spikes in insulin, which in the absence of other foods being ingested can bring on other unwanted side effects.</p>
<p>
<p>4.  <strong>Long-term fasting can rid the body of toxins.</strong> </p>
<p>
<p>Not true. Long term fasting can deplete the body of many, many necessary and vital nutrients, and bring on a host of associated problems due to the body&#8217;s inability to fight off anything. There is a reason people die from long term fasts.</p>
<p>
<p><img alt='No Food Allowed' src='http://www.girlwithnoname.com/images/No-Food-Allowed.jpg' align="left" width='160' height='160' style="border-style: none"/>5.  <strong>Political fasting is a viable way to make a point.</strong></p>
<p>
<p>Doing a prolonged fast for a political cause is one of the worst ways to make a point. Short, one or two day fasts are sufficient, but probably don&#8217;t have the sensational aspect political believers seek.</p>
<p>
<p>6.  <strong>Fasting is only for medical purposes. </strong></p>
<p>
<p>Not true. While there are valid medical reasons when a fast is recommended, such as before surgery or blood tests, there are other useful benefits of fasting.</p>
<p>
<p>7.  <strong>Fasting is way too hard. </strong></p>
<p>
<p>Again, not true! A one or two day fast can be accomplished with no problem by almost anyone.</p>
<p>
<p>Fasting can be a useful tool to aid in a total health plan. Done correctly there are virtually none of the popular &#8220;side effects&#8221; such as light-headedness or weakness. </p>
<p>
<p>So, don&#8217;t be derailed by fears and myths and you&#8217;ll find that fasting can, in fact, be a healthy addition to your health, fitness, fat loss or muscle building regime!</p>

<p>Hey everyone!! </p>
<p>Ever try to record a blog video when you have guests arriving at the same time?  That was my challenge today!!  It&#8217;s kinda funny, but I got &#8216;er done anyway!</p>
<p>So, how is your weekend going?  <strong>Getting ready for the holidays?  Trying your best to avoid the treats and goodies??</strong>  Well, here&#8217;s something that may interest you if you&#8217;re having a helluva time getting around that challenge!</p>
<p>As I was getting ready for a holiday party tonight, I got to thinking about the other ways I manage my consumption during the holidays so I don&#8217;t pack on the pounds with all the temptations floating around.</p>
<p>I got a great idea from <a href="http://gwnn.me/ese">Brad Pilon</a>, the guy that developed the <a href="http://gwnn.me/ese">Eat Stop Eat</a> system of intermittent fasting&#8230;</p>
<p>&#8230;and then combined that with some suggestions <a href="http://gwnn.me/BFFM3537">Tom Venuto</a>, author of <a href="http://gwnn.me/BFFM3537">Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle</a> gave us in his <a href="http://www.girlwithnoname.com/2009/11/interview-with-tom-venuto-author-of-burn-the-fat-feed-the-muscle/">awesome interview</a> a few posts ago.</p>

<p>I&#8217;m glad the weekend is here but at the same time a little sad last week is over because it was definitely an interesting week this week!!  </p>
<p>The brilliant guys behind <a href="http://gwnn.me/GetAE"><strong>The Adonis Effect Workout System For Men</strong></a> were in town for the <a href="http://www.csep.ca">Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology</a> (CSEP) conference here in Vancouver and I was honoured to get a chance to hang out with them a couple of times.  </p>
<p><a href="http://gwnn.me/JohnBarbanBlog"><strong>John Barban</strong></a> and <a href="http://gwnn.me/BradPilonBlog"><strong>Brad Pilon</strong></a> are fascinating guys and their program &#8220;<strong>The Adonis Effect</strong>&#8221; is something I personally stand behind.  </p>
<p>Anyway, Vancouver is a great place to get some quality sushi so I convinced them to come with me to my favourite sushi joint and once we&#8217;d had just enough sake, the conversation turned to <a href="http://gwnn.me/GetAE"><em>how they came up with The Adonis Effect</em></a>.  </p>
