On my foray into that commercial gym last week (have you seen this: RANT: Why Are Some People Such IDIOTS In The Gym?) I saw something else that made me stop and scratch my head in bewilderment.

Listen, I know that some cardio is boring.

But so boring that you must read a magazine in the process? And therefore, let your workout suffer?

Can you really get your upper body working hard if you’re reading a magazine?

Um. No. You can’t.

So why is this gym now SUPPLYING magazines for it’s members to read on the cardio equipment?

And why are people still doing cardio they find THAT boring, when there are SO MANY other options available?

Are you on a mobile device? You probably can’t see the video, can you? If not, watch it on YouTube here:
Is Your Cardio Really THAT Boring?

Keep your mind on your game.

If you’re so bored you have to resort to reading magazines, it’s time to change it up and go do something more interesting.

Things that spring immediately to mind include: HIIT (interval training), Weight Training SuperCircuits*, swimming, team sports like soccer …

… heck, even playing with the dog is fun and interesting, and if you’re doing lots of running and chasing games you’re definitely getting a good cardio workout.

So, don’t tune out in the pages of some time-wasting gossip magazine.

Get the MOST out of your workout by keeping your head AND your upper body in the game.

You’re there anyway, right? You may as well get as much out of it as possible!!

*At a loss when it comes to those Weight Training SuperCircuits I mentioned?

Craig Ballantyne has everything you’re looking for in his Turbulence Training Fat Burning Circuits Manual.

It has great and effective Weight Training Circuit Routines especially designed to burn fat that will get your heart racing and your blood pumping, and keep you motivated and interested for a long time to come.

It’s Here! Happy New Year!!

With this brand spanking new year upon us I know a lot of us are embarking on new fat loss or fitness plans.

There are so many people that start each new year with the best of intentions and the loftiest of resolutions they’re determined to keep.

Are you one of them?

Do you know that most resolutions are tossed aside within 3 months of the new year?

Why? Well, probably because most people don’t see the results they’d hoped for and give up.

And they’re not seeing the results they’d hoped for because they don’t really know how to get those results effectively.

So many mistakes. So many abandoned resolutions.

That sucks.

Good news! My buddy Craig Ballantyne sent me this excellent article to share with you so that YOU don’t wind up making some of the most COMMON mistakes that sabotage almost everyone’s fat loss resolutions.

This is stuff you NEED TO KNOW if you’re serious about getting some results from your fat loss efforts this year.

So, give this a read and arm yourself with the facts. Then, let’s make THIS batch of New Years Resolutions the batch that we KEEP !!

Thanks Craig!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
7 Top Weight Loss Mistakes
When it comes to fat loss, I feel like I’ve been everywhere and seen everything. I’ve watched 95% of people in the gyms struggle with weight loss and make no progress, but I’ve also watched the weirdest and wildest regimens work for others.
And in dealing with thousands of people on the Internet and through the Men’s Health website, I’ve been able to pick up on the “Seven Mistakes People Make When Trying to Lose Fat”
Here they are to help you avoid them …
1. People simply fail to consider the consequences of their actions.
Alwyn Cosgrove (one of the top trainers in the business) once told me, “I get my clients to think, ‘Will this help me or not? Is this a positive step or not?’ If you can see that every action that you take is either helping you lose fat or stopping you from losing fat, then you will start to make better choices.”
So remember that everything you put in your mouth is either for or against fat loss. And every exercise choice you make is either for or against fat loss. “Get that”, Alwyn says, “and you’re a hit.”
2. People neglect to control their insulin and blood sugar levels – 2 key factors in determining whether or not the body fat will come off.
If you eat processed foods you are guaranteed to elevate your insulin & blood sugar levels. If you do that, your body sends the message, “Store fat!”, and you won’t make any progress. So avoid white-flour based bakery products, sugary drinks, and almost any carbohydrate snack that comes in a bag or a box.
3. People train like it’s the 80′s.
Yes, I know. Eighties music is popular again. But that doesn’t mean ineffective training methods from the 80′s like light weights, low intensity steady state cardio, and endless low-intensity ab work should also make a comeback. That type of training should stay buried in the back issues of cheesy muscle magazines. Stick to strength training and interval training for efficient and effective body changing routines.
I know that the “fat-burning” zone and “morning cardio on an empty stomach” has been drilled into your heads by well-meaning trainers and articles, but science just doesn’t support this.
The latest on fat loss research from Australia has shown that a 20-minute interval program led to significantly more weight loss than 40-minute aerobic sessions.
We must adapt our programs to the science in order to succeed. Don’t be left behind!
4. People don’t take 30 minutes to plan their next day’s food intake.
If you fail to do this, you will set your fat loss efforts back by a minimum of 72 hours. Without a good meal plan, you are left to hunt and gather food in the modern world. And that’s a recipe for fat loss disaster. You are bound to eat something processed if you aren’t prepared. You will lose the fat burning benefits from yesterday’s workout and it will take until the end of the following day to get back on track. An entire 72-hour period wasted.
5. People don’t eat enough vegetables.
We can thank John Berardi for making it common knowledge that you should eat fiber-rich vegetables at every meal to assist your fat loss efforts. By doing so, you’ll control your blood sugar and insulin – thus supporting the optimal hormonal situation for fat loss.
6. People screw up their hormones with poor lifestyle choices.
If you are out boozing and staying up late on the weekend, you are shutting down your fat loss and messing up the optimal hormonal environment for fat burning. I will talk a lot more about the optimal hormonal levels for fat loss in the future, as I believe this is the underrated key to building your best body ever.
7. People don’t plan and monitor their training sessions.
If you are still going to the gym without a plan, then you are going to have a hard time losing fat. And if you aren’t recording your workouts and eating habits, then you aren’t losing as much fat as you probably can. To fix this mistake, start by getting on track with strength training and interval training. It’s guaranteed to get you lean.
I know that your motivation is high at this time of the year. So grab a good program based on science, add to that a nutrition PLAN (that is actually planned out on paper – like the TT Nutrition Guidelines from Dr. Chris Mohr), and get some social support on your side and you will succeed this year.
OOOO!!! A long weekend is upon us here in Canada!!
And with that, comes the perfect excuse to slack off a bit! LOL
Oh waitaminit, I’m not slacking the workouts… that’s not what I meant … I’ll still be kicking it hard with my usual strength training routines and interval training sessions … even a holiday is no excuse not to take good care of the vehicle you travel through life in … at least it’s not to ME.
Anyway, I digress. My point was: I want to take today off of work !
So, I decided to let someone else do my job today.
Thanks to Craig Ballantyne for granting me permission to share this awesome article with you here.
I love Craig’s ideas about how to quickly and easily change up a workout routine that is boring you lately, on the fly.
But, what I like MOST about this article is the LAST thought that he shares.
3 Cool Workout Tips to Switch Up A Boring Workout Routine
By Craig Ballantyne, CSCS, MS
TURBULENCE TRAINING
If you want to switch up a boring workout routine, here are 3 cool workout tips that you can use to switch up your workouts without sacrificing results.
1) Do the opposite exercise workout
If you are doing weights, try using bodyweight exercises instead, and vice-versa. So let’s say you are doing dumbbell chest presses, switch to an advanced pushup instead. Or maybe you are doing db rows, so switch to pullups, chinups, or bodyweight rows. Doing lunges? Switch to bulgarian split squats and use the 1 & 1/2 rep style.
2) Use opposite style rest periods (take extra rest between exercises)
In this method, I want you to take 1 minute between exercises and 2 minutes between supersets. The extra rest will allow you to lift heavier weights. But that will make your workout longer, so cut out the third superset.
3) Opposite programming supersets to circuit
If you are doing supersets, switch to doing all the exercises in a circuit. you’ll use lighter weights (slightly), but possibly get your workout done faster. A great change of pace without sacrificing results.
By the way …
Have you told yourself over and over again that you just can’t do something, even though you have nothing to base that on?
What would happen if you just started believing the OPPOSITE?
It’s a simple little shift in mindset. But it could change your life.
Let me know if you need any help with that one.
Have an amazing weekend.
If you like doing bodyweight workouts but find yours getting a little limited and boring, here's some ideas to change things up and liven things up!
Bodyweight training is a great way to get in shape and stay in shape. Particularly when you don’t have access to conventional weight training equipment like free weights or other resistance machines like cables.
Unfortunately, bodyweight training can be a bit more limited because you only have your body and gravity at your disposal. This can cause your workout to get dull quickly if you don’t know how to mix it up a little bit.
Let’s face it, doing the same old moves over and over again with no variety can be boring.
So, let’s mix it up! Let’s take some of the most popular bodyweight moves and tweak them so they’re new and exciting again, shall we?
SQUATS
Squats are a great compound move that burns fat fast but wow, can they get stale in a hurry. Luckily there’s lots of ways to change up a squat.
Try doing one legged squats. How about Split Squats?
Then there’s Bulgarian Squats (one leg elevated on a bench behind you … see picture).
Don’t forget about Sumo Squats or Plie Squats. These are similar in that they both incorporate a wider stance with toes pointing out rather than straight forward. Sumo squats take you a little deeper than Plie squats.
Speaking of deeper squats, did you know that deeper squats are harder than regular squats?
Try 3/4 squats where you squat til your butt almost hits the ground, then come up only 3/4 of the way before returning to the lower position. I think you’ll be surprised how difficult these ones are.
Heck, you can even take the regular bodyweight squat and do a timed set to see how many squats you can do in a limited time period.
I like to do a 5 minute Power Squat Blast. My record for proper form bodyweight squats in 5 minutes in 218. That’s not easy to do, but it’s a great workout.
See? All it takes is a little imagination and there’s a ton of ways to change up a squat.
PUSH-UPS
Now, how about Push-ups? The ways to change up a push-up seem endless.
Try doing the moves with your hands at different widths, the closer together you put your hands, the more you’ll work your triceps.
Or, try some pushups with your hands really wide apart. Try Offset push-ups (putting one hand near your ribcage and one in the regular spot, then switch hand positions for another set).
Spiderman push-ups (where you bring your knee up to your elbow as your lower your body) are also a fun way to change things up.
Don’t forget if this move is getting too easy for you, you can always elevate your feet (on a bench or chair, or if you’re really strong, try the wall). The higher up you get your feet, the harder the push-up will be.
If you’re really a jock and all this is still too easy, go for the one handed variety (see picture). Anyone that can do those, gets MY respect!
PULL-UPS
Now we have to conquer the boredom of the same old Pull-ups over and over (although I’m not really sure how anyone can get BORED doing pull-ups since that is one tough move).
One of the easiest ways to change up a pull-up is to merely change your grip. Having your palms facing away from you constitutes regular pull-ups. Having your palms facing towards you is what is known as a chin-up.
Another way to change up your grip is to widen it. The wider your grip, the harder it will be.
Another plus about widening your grip is that the further your hands are apart, the harder you’re going to hit your back muscles and develop that “V” look (which also helps your waist look tighter).
And again, if you’re really a jock, get at it with the one armed variety. Oh, and if you’re going to do some of those, can I please watch?
Don’t forget to strive for your full ‘range of motion’ (make sure your arms come to straight at the bottom and your chin gets above the bar at the top).
Heck, you can even try out some “Muscle-ups” (bring your body all the way up to hip-level with the bar).
Having a hard time mastering the pull-up? Try “kipping”. This is where you add a little ‘kick’ in your body movement to help drive you up to the bar.
And if pull-ups are STILL a challenge to you, try working the negative instead of the positive. This means you jump up to get yourself up to the bar instead of pulling yourself up (or use a stool or chair to step up to the bar). Then once you’re at the top position you remove the chair (kick it away if you have to) and lower yourself to the bottom position very slowly (and very methodically, staying in complete control).
This will help you build up your strength and technique in all the right muscles so that eventually you’ll find pulling yourself doable.
There! See how easy that was to change things up?
Now there’s no reason for your next bodyweight workout to feel stale. Add some of these variations into your routine and you’ll be re-energized.
If you workout at home, getting your form right is extremely important. But without the help of a trainer or other people in a commercial gym, how do you figure it out?
Keeping fit is a challenge in it’s own right.
Exercise is hard to do and sometimes just hard to motivate out the door to get it done.
However, the benefits it reaps far outweigh the difficulties.
Many choose to forego the time consuming and expensive route of joining a gym and then having to travel to and from and wait to use the equipment if it’s busy.
Instead these people choose to get their workouts in the privacy of their own home or apartment or condo gym.
I applaud those people being able to motivate without the energy of other people working out around them.
Heck, I happen to BE one of those people.
But if you are a ‘home workout’ maven like myself, how do you know you’re getting it right?
No gym employees, personal trainers or even other exercisers around you to learn from.
Getting your form correct is vitally important especially when you’re weight training.
If you aren’t careful or don’t know exactly what you’re doing, you could injure yourself … badly.
So, what do you do? How do you keep yourself safe?
Well, when I was first starting out, the answer to all my prayers turned out to be the Internet.
Wow!
What a huge resource of great information there is on health and fitness on the internet.
You can tap into articles, great explanatory pictorial blogs, audio interviews … and MY absolute favourite: instructional videos. There are thousands of them on the internet.
You can find everything from how to do stretches to how to do proper form when lifting very heavy equipment like dumbbells, barbells, kettlebells and even your own bodyweight.
However, let’s get one thing very straight before you jump off and start watching videos and copying everything you see:
Just because it’s on the internet does NOT make it completely and 100% accurate.
Don’t get me wrong, there’s TONS of fantastic tutorials on the Internet. But not ALL of them are as fantastic as others.
Just because ‘Joe with a Website‘ has a swish-looking webspace doesn’t mean that he knows what he’s doing when it comes to doing a proper barbell squat, or lunge … or push-up for that matter. I’ve seen some pretty bad videos out there demonstrating what is very harmful and dangerous form for some exercises.
And don’t be fooled by slick looking videos or polished surroundings in the videos.
If ‘Joe with a Website‘ has a great looking video all that means is he probably rented space in a fancy gym, has a great cameraman, good technical knowledge or an entire production team and another one that knows how to build a great website to host said fancy video.
It does NOT (necessarily) mean he knows his stuff when it comes to exercise.
I mean, he MIGHT be awesome when it comes to proper form and technique with his exercises. But the fancy video alone is not an indication he knows what he’s talking about.
So when you’re watching videos or looking at pictures to get your form right, make sure you view SEVERAL for EACH move you’re trying to learn.
Compare and contrast them. Pay careful attention to how they explain themselves and you’ll soon learn who knows what they’re talking about and who’s a complete hack.
And if you’re still questioning who knows best, start frequenting forums or asking around to other fitness-minded people on the Social Networking sites.
It will soon become apparent who is good and who is not. Usually, the best and most knowledgeable will get recommended by others often and the most.
So be careful out there. Learn as much as you can but learn from the best, not the worst.
Because when it comes to your health, doing it right the first time and avoiding injury is of the utmost importance.
Remember … just because it’s on the internet doesn’t make it true!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

11 Ways to Stay Motivated in Your Fat Loss Program
By Craig Ballantyne, CSCS, MS
Author, Turbulence Training

Today, we’re going to focus on something that I know a lot of men and women are struggling with – MOTIVATION.

So here are my top 11 inspirational tips to help motivate you to stick to your fat loss plan and transform your body & life forever.

11. Never Give Up

If you fall off the wagon, cut your losses. Don’t let it weigh on your mind and hold you back because it’s only minor damage that can be dealt with. The important thing is to get back on track, immediately. Never, ever, EVER give up. I believe in you.

10. Don’t Procrastinate

Do it now. Whether you’re thinking of cleaning out the pantry or finally starting to exercise, STOP procrastinating and DO IT now!

9. Identify Exactly What It Is You Want…

… then don’t let anything stand in your way of getting it. By setting specific goals along with deadlines you are providing yourself with a measuring stick.

8. Do Your Best With Everything You Have Control Over

Most people fail to control themselves, and end up only with regrets. We trade minutes of pleasure (i.e. fast food) for days, weeks, months, and years of regret.

Remember that the pleasure of eating lasts for only minutes, but you inhabit your body 24 hours per day, 7 days per week for life.

Rather than trying to “out-cardio” your bad diet, you must PLAN ahead to overcome obstacles. Otherwise, you’ll never succeed.

7. Replace Bad Habits

Everyday you will be tempted to fall back on old bad habits. To make a lasting change in your health and appearance you must do everything you can to resist that. Try adding a new healthy habit each day to replace an old unhealthy habit.

6. Be Consistent With Baby Steps

The best approach is to build your life one positive step at a time and the way to do this is by taking baby steps to improvement each and every single day. Be a little better than yesterday.

5. Test

There are no failures, only good and bad tests.

You should always be trying something new, monitoring your body’s response, and deciding whether or not that food or exercise belongs in your “tool box”. Do everything you can to learn more about your body. The more you know, the faster your success will be.

4. Social Support & Role Modeling

You can’t soar with eagles if you’re hanging around turkeys.

By hanging around others who want to lose weight, you can leverage their knowledge, commitment, support, and success to push yourself harder than you otherwise would be able to.

3. Get Out Of Your Comfort Zone

People will do almost anything to stay in their comfort zones.

If you want to accomplish anything, get out of your comfort zone and strive to increase order and discipline in your life.

Discipline means doing the opposite of what you feel like doing. Setting goals and deadlines are the easy roads to discipline.

2. Plan

Planning is the ultimate key to fat loss success.

With a weekly plan of meals and workouts in place, you will be much less likely to hit a road bump that takes you down the wrong path. Try setting aside one day a week to map out your weekly itinerary and you’ll be amazed at how quickly your body transforms itself.

1. Realize YOU Are In Charge of Your Success

Og Mandino once said, “I shall shape my future. Whether I fail or succeed shall be no man’s doing but my own. I am the force; I can clear any obstacle before me. Or I can be lost in the maze. My choice. My responsibility. Win or lose; only I hold the key to my destiny.”

Translation – Everyone can succeed and reach their goals. It’s a just a matter of how badly you want it.

I know you want it. And I know you can do it. And I’m really looking forward to your success.

IT’S CONFESSION TIME!!

… my quads were hurting from my previous day’s Kettlebell workout, my hamstrings were acting up and I thought it was just going to be one horrible run …

Until …

Hey everyone. A bright shiny new week ahead of us. So full of possibility, right?

Got big plans? Big WORKOUT plans?

Hope so.

Anyway, had an interesting (and insanely intense) workout yesterday doing some HIIT (high intensity interval training) on the seawall.

So, I thought I’d share my story!

Let’s just say that there’s lots of ways to kick it up a notch …

… even if you just make up a mock competition with a total stranger solely in your own head.

That’s the tactic I used yesterday!

IS THIS THE ANSWER TO ALL MY PRAYERS?

Glute Ham Raises Discovered In Craig Ballantyne’s Turbulence Training Manual !!

Hey Everyone!! Is it the end of the weekend already? Man, they really do fly by, don’t they?

Anyway, I’m still on the warpath to solve my Hamstring issues and have decided to get more serious about strengthening them (rather than stretching them).

Every expert has a differing opinion about what my problem is (too tight, too weak, not stretched enough, out of balance, I’ve heard it all) …

… and the more I sit at my computer feeling them getting more and more sore during the day as they get more and more stretched from sitting, the more I believe that WEAK, overstretched hamstrings is actually my issue (as opposed to them being too tight), therefore it’s time to give them some harder work to do … REGULARLY.

So, after spending a bunch of time flipping through the many tomes I have here from many fitness experts, I happened upon this great exercise while flipping through Craig Ballantyne’s awesome Turbulence Training bodyweight manuals that just might be the answer to all my problems!

Check it out:

And, as promised, here’s Craig Ballantyne himself demo’ing them for us:

Plus, here’s another great demo by someone who really knows how to do them well:

Craig has lots of great bonuses available right now, too! So head over there to see what he’s got on offer if you grab Turbulence Training today:

Get Turbulence Training

As always, let’s end it all on a musical note (haha, did I just make a pun?)!

Here’s today’s Workout Song of the Day.

Yes, I’ve tied it in with the subject of the post in my usual smarty-pants style. With luck and a few strengthening exercises like these Glute Ham Raises, hopefully my hamstring issues will be … (ready for it? …) GONE DADDY GONE!! LOL.

It’s also a great song for running because it has a great fast beat that drives my feet forward (and heck … it’s pretty good for strength-training too, seeing as it has that touch of angst going for it!)…

Enjoy:
